Best American Road Trips: Cayuga Scenic Byway

May 5th, 2013 by Katie Pate

Yahoo! Travel named the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway one of ‘Ten Great All-American Road Trips’ in May of last year. This is quite an honor for our region, as we join the ranks of famous American routes like the Pacific Coast Highway in California and the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.

The  87- mile Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway circles Cayuga Lake and runs through Cayuga, Tompkins and Seneca Counties.  The byway offers beautiful vistas of natural formations, wineries, historic sites, and practically endless recreational opportunities in, on and around the water.

Yahoo! Travel is the second most popular travel website (after TripAdvisor) with over 26 million estimated unique monthly visitors.

Make Halsey House A Stop on Your Road Trip

If you decide to come upstate and tour the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway, we hope you will stay at our bed and breakfast along the way. We are directly adjacent to the Byway, about 2 miles off the highway.

Other Sites on the Byway

The National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls. In Seneca Falls in 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton (a Seneca Falls resident), Lucretia Mott and 300 other women and men held the first Women’s Rights Convention.  The struggle for women’s rights in America had begun.

It took seventy-two years before women were granted the right to vote and more than 100 until the Hall of Fame was built. In 1969, Seneca Falls created the National Women’s Hall of Fame, believing that the contributions of American women deserved a permanent home in the small village where the fight for women’s rights began.  The Hall is currently housed in the Helen Mosher Barben Building, in the heart of the downtown Historic District.

The Cayuga Wine Trail. The Finger Lakes region is the largest wine producing region East of California. Along the byway, there are a large number of beautiful vineyards with wineries offering delicious tastings. See our Cayuga Wine Trail map.

If not, we still have rooms available at our upstate NY bed and breakfast for Valentine’s day weekend. In fact, all of our rooms are open for a Friday night arrival – make the most of the holiday and book two nights with us!

Stay in the Elegance Room, with a roaring fireplace, 40″ HDTV and luxuriant queen-size bed. The bathroom has a multi-head spa shower. We offer in-room breakfast as well, which you can enjoy in front of the  windows in plush bathrobes.

Or, the Serenity suite is also available. Instead of a fireplace, we have a built-in waterfall apparatus, which is where this room gets it’s name. A king-size bed does not feel over-sized in this spacious room, which provides plenty of privacy.

Lastly, the Chamber Suite is also available. This room has a lovely queen size bed with wrought iron frame and a marble shower. At 12′ by 17′, it is just the right size for a couple to cozy up together!

Romantic Spaces at the Inn

We have a lovely courtyard where, should the weather allow, we  will stoke the outdoor fire pit so you can cuddle together and meditate on the dancing flames while enjoying some wine or a hot beverage. Too cold to be outside? We have a large parlor with a fireplace that you can appreciate.

Interested in New York Wine?

We are open year-round and close to the Finger Lakes Seneca and Cayuga. These lakes are very active during the summertime, but even in the winter, their beauty is mesmerizing. In addition, the many wineries in this area make it a great place to visit, even when its chilly. We can recommend a wine tasting tour with your own designated driver. Just call us for the details.

We hope to see you soon!

My husband and I recently stayed at this fabulous B and B, for a 29th anniversary celebration! What a fabulous spot!! We loved our room, Serenity, and the entire property was above expectations! The house is so beautiful, with a wonderful dining room set for a fantastic breakfast! Very relaxing and special! The outdoor area, with Adirondack rockers set next to a pretty waterfall feature within a garden, was a great place to enjoy a glass of Red before dinner! …The bed was extremely comfortable, and the pillows and linens are super!! I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a bit of “special” in the midst of the everyday!!

My husband and I stayed here for our first year anniversary and it was amazing. The place looks exactly like the pictures on the website. We had breakfast delivered to our room and that was also incredible. The food was very good, Orange Cream French Toast, with fruit parfait beforehand. Excellent. Couldn’t have asked for more…

Spring Break in the Finger Lakes

February 26th, 2012 by Gail

Spend Spring Break in the Finger Lakes.

Spring Break is on the horizon, and all across the country, people are making travel plans. You could travel to Mexico or Colorado or France, but such trips require flying, and we all know what airlines do to plane fares at this time of year. We have a better idea. We suggest a trip to our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast.

Spring should come early to the Finger Lakes Region this year, since we’ve seen very little winter weather. Conditions should be ideal for outdoor recreation such as hiking, horseback riding, and golfing. On fair days, guests may even enjoy boating on the Finger Lakes; most scenic cruises start in early to mid April, but paddling along the shore is fun any time of year. If it snows, bring snowshoes and skis!

The 150+ waterfalls scattered throughout the Finger Lakes Region are amazing winter, spring, summer, and fall. Some are still encrusted in ice at this time of year, while others maintain a steady roar. There are generally fewer people hiking to waterfalls in the spring, which makes it an ideal time for our guests to explore them. Two of our favorites are nearby Taughannock Falls and the magical, mystical Watkins Glen Falls.

Finger Lakes Winery

Explore the Finger Lakes Wine Country during Spring Break.

Wine tasting is another favorite activity around the Finger Lakes, and it is well-suited for cold or rainy days. Both the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail are home to more than a dozen wineries, many of which are quite close to our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast. A bit farther west, the Keuka Lake Wine Trail features eight wineries. Sip and spit, designate a driver, or consider a wine tour that will safely shuttle you from one winery to the next. One of the perks of wine tasting is that it allows you to try many wines, so that you know you like the bottles you purchase.

Enjoy a Romantic Spring Break with your sweetie at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast, or gather together a group of friends and rent our Finger Lakes Guest Cottage. Either way, you are sure to have a good time.

Best Places to Steal a Kiss

February 7th, 2012 by Gail

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the romantics among us are considering the best places to steal a kiss by the Finger Lakes. This blog is to help guests of our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast find such spots. Read on for inspiration.

emptyspace(s)

Steal a kiss as often as you can.

It’s hard to resist kissing the one you love when standing on the overlook at Taughannock Falls. The roaring water tumbles more than 200 feet to the quiet pool below; surrounding cliffs soar another 200 feet above the top of the falls. Hide in the mist and steal a kiss.

If standing in the presence of magnificent art makes your heart beat faster, visit Cornell University’s Johnson Art Museum during your stay at our Finger Lakes B&B. Permanent exhibits range from African sculpture to Tantric Buddhist ritual implements and contemporary prints and photographs. Find a corner by a window on the fifth floor, admire the stunning view of Ithaca and Cayuga Lakes, and steal your kiss.

On a pleasant afternoon, the deck of the Thirsty Owl Wine Company is a sweet spot to steal a kiss. The winery is perched the west side of Cayuga Lake and boasts more than 2,000 feet of lake frontage. Their Tasting Room is open daily until 5:30 p.m. (later on Friday and Saturday); sip a glass of their award winning 2010 Pinot Gris or 2008 Pinot Noir while watching the sunset.

The sofas in the bar at Madeline’s on the Commons seem to invite a quick kiss. Sink into a sofa as you enjoy one of their 24 cognacs, 63 scotches, or 100+ wines. Whether it’s a busy or quiet evening, you’re sure to find a moment to steal a kiss.

A dinner cruise is inherently romantic. Step aboard the M/V Columbia and float on Cayuga Lake as you feast on herbed Balsamic Chicken with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce, Grilled Sirloin Steak with Red Wine and Mushroom Demi Glace, or a rich Vegetarian Lasagna. It sure sounds like a perfect place to steal a kiss. Cruises will recommence in April, but you can plan your spring romantic getaway to the Finger Lakes now.

People stay at the Halsey House for many reasons. Some come to the region for business, some to see family or friends, and some to visit Ithaca College or Cornell University. Quite a few couples stay with us in order to be pampered and have a romantic getaway. It doesn’t really matter why you’re here. If you’re traveling with your sweetie, take a few moments to go someplace special, and steal a kiss.

Spend the Holidays at our Fingers Lakes Bed and Breakfast

December 20th, 2011 by Gail

There are times to stay home for the holidays, there are times to stay with family, and there are times to try something new. If you feel like you need something different this holiday season, consider spending a few days at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast near Ithaca, New York.

Enjoy a cozy Christmas at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast.

Couples spending their first Christmas or New Year together may want to forego familial obligations and busy parties with dozens of friends. If all you want to do is gaze into each others’ eyes, cuddle by the fire, and enjoy lazy mornings, there is no place better for you than Halsey House.

Empty nesters may also find it refreshing to spend the holidays away from home. If your twenty somethings are busy exploring the world and unable to come home next week, hop in the car and head to our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast. Rediscover each other. In future years, your holidays will undoubtedly be filled with grandchildren; this year, make the season all about you.

There is much to do in the Finger Lakes Region, if you can pull yourself away from the warmth of Halsey House.

Wine tasting is one of our favorite activities, especially during holidays. What better way to find gifts than to hand pick wines for the oenophiles in your life? The Finger Lakes Region is lauded as one of the best producers of Rieslings in the country; indeed, the Rieslings produced here rival some of the finest Rieslings in the world. This is particularly noteworthy at this time of year, as Rieslings are perfect for holiday toasts.

Several local wineries are hosting special events in the coming weeks. Red Newt Cellars invites Wine Lovers to attend Winelovers’ Night at their Bistro on Thursday, December 22, 2011. Try new wines or your old favorite wines; Red Newt Cellars offers an extensive list of wines by the glass, their own and others. Glenora Wine Cellars and Veraisons Restaurant are offering dinner and dancing on New Year’s Eve. Dozens of other wineries are open daily for wine tasting and tours throughout the holiday season.

Join us at Halsey House, a Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast, this holiday season. Try something new and different. You may find yourself wanting to come here year after year.

Don’t Stay Home for the Holidays

November 29th, 2011 by Gail

The holidays are approaching, and across the nation people are making plans. They’re contacting family and friends and discussing options. Some people will travel to see family in distant places. Others will welcome family from distant places into their homes. And still others need a different option.

Treat yourself to Christmas or New Year’s at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast.

Our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast is a great “meet in the middle” spot for folks coming from points north, south, east and west. In the past, families and friends from Canada, New York State, and Pennsylvania have met here. No one is the host – everyone just relaxes and enjoys the good company.

Still, sometimes it’s just not possible to see family during the holidays. Much as we may wish to spend Christmas with parents, children, and grandchildren in distant locales, schedules and wallets sometimes trump that desire. Yet still, we want the holidays to be special. We want them to stand out from our daily lives.

Spend the holidays at our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast.

Guests are invited to make themselves at home at Halsey House, both in their rooms and in the inn’s common areas. Curl up with a new book by the fireplace in the Parlor, or play an engrossing game of chess with your partner. Enjoy a game on the leather-topped table in the library – the perfect spot for cards and puzzles. Luxuriate in your own room, lounging in bed, watching the HDTV, or soaking in the two-person whirlpool tub.

Numerous activities await beyond the inn’s walls. Walk down the street to Taughannock State Park and gaze in wonder at Taughannock Falls, one of the highest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains. Nearby Finger Lakes National Forest has more than 30 miles of trails that lead to lovely gorges, woods, and pasture. If there is snow on the ground, bring your cross-country skis. Or explore the shops, art galleries, museums, and eateries of nearby Ithaca.

Then, of course, there are the wineries. The Finger Lakes Region is known for its wine, and wine tasting is a fantastic holiday treat. Our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast, located between Cayuga and Seneca Lakes, is the perfect home base for folks interested in tasting wines along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Travel them on your own, or ask us about a Wine Tasting Tour.

Our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast is twenty minutes from both Cornell University and Ithaca College. We’re two hours from Scranton, Pennsylvania, an hour and a half from Rochester, New York, and an hour and ten minutes from Syracuse, New York. Our inn is nestled in an idyllic region replete with impressive waterfalls, deep gorges, and wonderful wineries. If you’re looking for a special way to celebrate the holidays this year – either Christmas or New Year’s Eve – spend them at Halsey House.

The Gift That Makes Memories

October 25th, 2011 by Gail

With the holidays on the horizon, many of us are beginning to ponder gift options for our friends and family.

A Mother´s Kiss [123/365]

A weekend at our Finger Lake Bed and Breakfast will leave parents refreshed and happy..

We want to give the people we love something special. We want them to have something that will be appreciated and remembered, and something that won’t eventually end up in a landfill. It’s a tall order, but we have an idea.

Give a night or two at our Finger Lakes Region Bed and Breakfast.

This is a gift anyone will appreciate, no matter their age or situation. Yet we have found it to be particularly cherished by parents of young children. For these couples, a weekend at our Finger Lakes Region Bed and Breakfast without their children is a slice of heaven. They just need someone to think of it for them – and someone to watch their kids.

For parents of young children, a romantic weekend is a rare event. Let’s face it, a date is a rare event; 24 – 48 hours away from the kids is unthinkable. Yet a night or two away can do wonders for the self and for the relationship.

Children are a gift. They are delightful and cuddly and funny and fascinating and sweet. Parents enjoy being with their children, and in truth, many parents never think of leaving their kids for any stretch of time.

Yet children are also demanding, as they should be. Young children need constant vigil, constant supervision, constant interaction. Add work and housework, and it’s easy to see why so many parents suffer from exhaustion. An evening out may be fun, but it often seems more trouble than it’s worth. A weekend away holds the promise of long, deep sleep, uninterrupted conversations, the chance to read a book…

A weekend away is also a wonderful opportunity for grandparents, aunts and uncles, and close friends to bond with children. There is nothing like an early morning snuggle, a long afternoon building castles out of boxes, or a bedtime story. The children will remember this special time, and they will cherish it.

Our Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast offers a Romantic Nights Package, a Celebration Package, and Wine Tasting Tours; any of these would be delightful additions to a weekend without the children. Yet even without add-ons, a night or two away with one’s spouse – and without the kids – is a gift that will be appreciated and remembered for years to come.

Plan a Special Occassion Celebration at a Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast

April 30th, 2011 by KC Christopher

There are events in life that give us cause for celebration, special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays and holidays.  These significant milestones beg to be shared with loved ones and friends, in a setting that provides comfort and the opportunity for relaxed gatherings.  A Bed and Breakfast can be a perfect fit for these venues, with personalized customer service you would be hard-pressed to find at a hotel or motel.

She said yes!

Are you looking for that perfect place to propose?  Or to spend your honeymoon?  The intimate nature of a bed and breakfast allows you to create a personalized and private experience in a setting that is both romantic and unique.

You can choose to enlist the assistance of the innkeeper for some behind-the-scenes special touches to make your occasion even more memorable.  Return from a special dinner to find your room softly lit and special music you chose playing in the background, a bottle of wine, champagne or perhaps a beautiful dessert waiting bedside.  Choose a room with a two-person Jacuzzi tub or the ambiance of a lovely fireplace to help you set the stage.  During your stay you can arrange for an in-house couple’s massage or spend an entire afternoon at a lovely local day spa.  Order up a picnic lunch to take to a romantic setting along the lake or on a chauffeured limo tour of wineries and waterfalls.

a summer picnic lunch with a bottle of wine

Maybe you are wanting to celebrate getting past a significant life event such as a divorce or the end of cancer treatment.  Perhaps you have become an empty-nester and find yourself at the beginning of a new chapter in your life.  It can be helpful and therapeutic to just get away to clear your mind and imagine what wonders lie ahead for you, in a setting that feels secure and friendly.

Whether you want a social gathering place to bring your friends, or a private retreat for you and your love, there is a B&B that can take your fantasy stay and make it a reality.  And these moments, my friends, are what making memories are all about.
