Did you know Ithaca ranked as the number one college town in America from Business Insider for 2012? We are so proud to call Ithaca home, as downtown is less than 10 miles from our bed and breakfast.
According to the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER), college towns with populations under 250,000 are relatively recession-proof, since they are home to a high proportion of students who are always spending. As a result, their economies tend to be more stable than those of larger cities.
Ithiaca scored particularly well in three categories: arts and leisure, entrepreneurial activity and (a lack of) unemployment. According to the AIER, these categories paint a good picture of an area’s economic health.
Ithaca, N.Y. once again took the top spot on the list!
Meanwhile, major metropolitan areas like Boston, New York, Washington, and San Francisco were knocked off this year’s top 10 list; Ann Arbor was the only city with a population of more than 250,000 that made the top 10.
Other Accolades for Ithaca
Most Secure Place to Live
The city of Ithaca was named by Farmers Insurance as “the Most Secure Place to Live” in the United States for municipalities under 150,000 in population in 2012. Every year, Farmers ranks nearly 400 U.S. communities based on safety and security.
The rankings take into consideration crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, foreclosures, air quality, terrorist threats, environmental hazards, life expectancy, mortality rates from cancer and motor vehicle accidents, and job loss numbers.
